The 68th Annual Farm City Banquet will be held on Thursday, November 13th, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. at the Boone United Methodist Church. Last year, due to Hurricane Helene recovery efforts across the region, the event was cancelled.

The banquet includes a dinner, sourced from local farms & catered this year by Coyote Kitchen. Following dinner, awards will be presented by commodity groups to their respective producers of the year, and the Watauga Soil and Water District will present the Farm Family of the Year award. The Boone Chamber of Commerce will present the “Tuckwiller Award” to recognize achievements in Community Development in memory of the late Lake Ernest Tuckwiller, past Watauga County Farm Agent. Several other awards are also presented to those in the farming, civic, and business community that have made significant contributions to agriculture and the economy, businesses, and volunteers that support it.

The banquet and awards ceremony is organized annually by the Watauga County office of North Carolina Cooperative Extension to celebrate the heritage of agriculture and recognize its continued importance in our local economy. The Farm City Banquet has a long history here in the county and across the US. The first “Farm City Week” took place in 1955 after a businessman from Vermont and the Chairman of the Kiwanis International Agriculture and Conservation Committee were seated together on a train headed from Chicago to Washington, D.C. At that time net farm income was declining across the country, farm costs, debts and property taxes were on the rise and it seemed that farm folks and city people were drifting farther and farther apart. After that train conversation, the National Farm-City Committee was created and coordinated by Kiwanis International. The Kiwanis Club actually coordinated Farm-City week until 1988 when the American Farm Bureau Federation assumed the responsibility. The event has been held in Watauga County and across the state ever since.

The event also includes music and door prizes of baskets of locally produced foods and other goodies. Acclaimed local artist Richard Tumbleston also donates an original piece of art as the final door prize.

The Watauga County Farm Bureau is the Platinum Sponsor and encourages both farm & city folk alike to come join your neighbors for supper. Our other generous sponsors include New River Building Supply and Lumber Co., AgSouth Farm Credit, Southern Ag, and Blue Ridge RC&D, who is sponsoring tickets for Watauga High FFA members.

Tickets are $15.00 per person (children 5 and under eat for free; children 6-12, $5) and can be purchased at the N.C. Cooperative Extension Center, 971 W King St., Boone, cash or check only. No tickets will be sold at the door and ticket sales are limited to 225. For more info, please call 828-264-3061.
