2026 Summer Fun was a Success!

We kicked the summer off with Junior Master Gardener Camp. Kids toured our Extension Master Gardener Educational Gardens where they learned what kinds of plants there are, and what they can taste and smell. Kids also learned about vermicomposting and worm bins, made stepping stones for and planted milkweed in the educational gardens, made seed balls to take home and plant, looked at plants and bugs under a microscope, and finally, used what they learned about the propagation room, greenhouse, and garden to complete a scavenger hunt.

Next, we had Pizza Camp! Throughout the three days, we visited several local farms and businesses to learn how food makes it to our table and picked up ingredients to make our own pizzas along the way. We visited Springhouse Farms, Tester Dairy, BFR Plant, Corbett's Produce, Bolick Farm, and Ashe County Cheese, then ended camp with making and eating our pizzas, cooked in a wood fired oven.

Next, we had Explore Nature Camp! We went to Grandfather Mountain, the Boone United Trail, Table Rock Fish Hatchery, Tuttle Educational Forest, the Beacon Heights Trail, and met with a professor at Appalachian State University. Kids learned about weather, wildlife and their habitats, maintaining forests, plant identification, and operations of fish hatcheries.

Lastly, we had our Cloverbud Art Camp! Kids learned about the color wheel and worked with air-dry clay to create an octopus, charms for a wall hanging, and pinch pot creatures.
