N.C. Cooperative Extensions will offer two workshops to help potential grant applicants understand, develop, and submit their Federal grant applications for the $30 million Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program (FMPP). These workshops represent a collaboration between the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service at NC State University and the N.C. Cooperative Extension Program at NC A&T State University with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) and National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA), and the four Regional Rural Development Centers. This effort is known as the Agricultural Marketing Service Technical Assistance (AMSTA) project.

As you may know, the USDA views the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program as a key to revitalizing rural economies by supporting local and regional food systems. The expectation is that these grant workshops will allow communities and businesses nationally to develop and submit competitive grant proposals that stimulate economic activity while also meeting the increasing demand for food that is grown locally or regionally. The Farmers Market Promotion Program supports farmers markets and other direct producer-to-consumer activities, while the Local Food Promotion Program supports enterprises that aggregate, store, distribute and process local and regional food.

Extension will hold two workshops in North Carolina during the month of April. One workshop will be held in Mount Olive, NC at Mount Olive University from 9 to 4 p.m. on April 11. The second will be held in Newton, NC at the Catawba County Agricultural Center from 9 to 4 p.m. on April 18.

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is coordinating the workshops in conjunction with the Regional Rural Development Centers. Becky Bowen (blbowen@ncsu.edu) and Dr. Noah Ranells (nnranell@ncat.edu) will provide the trainings in North Carolina. We see this as an important opportunity for potentially strengthening local and regional food systems in North Carolina through projects that recruit and train farmers, expand economic opportunities, and increase access to healthy foods.
