Collapse ▲The N.C. Cooperative Extension of Watauga County will offer a series of classes in 2020 on using perennials in the landscape. These classes are designed to make you more successful at creating an aesthetically pleasing perennial garden, that provides season-long color, as well as food for pollinators, birds, and wildlife.
Class 1: Selecting and planting perennials for the home garden: This class will cover how to select plants for your site, narrowing down the long list of available perennials to help you select ones that will give you long periods of bloom that overlap to create season-long color. We will also discuss plants that have benefits for pollinators, birds, and wildlife.

- Presented live over Zoom, it will be recorded for those who can’t attend during class time. Accommodations can be made to attend in person for those without access to Zoom.

Class 2: Perennial Maintenance: This class will be hands-on in our Educational Garden. While perennials come back every year, there is plenty of maintenance that goes along with a successful garden. We will learn how to test your soil, cut plants back, dig and divide, advantages and disadvantages of different mulches, how to keep your garden weed-free, and more.
- To keep everyone safe and distanced, group size will be limited to 10 participants, please wear a mask, we can consider adding another time-slot if needed.

Class 3 Perennial Garden Design Concepts: This class will introduce you to the principals of designing a perennial garden including spatial arrangement of plants by height, proper spacing for plant size, creating a succession of bloom to last through the season, incorporating texture, and using color in the garden to create a simple and balanced look.
- Thursday, October 22, 4:00-5:30. All registrants will receive a recording so you can watch at your convenience.
